Midtown Miami – Edgewater and Wynwood

Midtown Miami is located north of Downtown Miami and just south of the world-famous Miami Design District. Midtown is a collective term that includes the Wynwood and Edgewater neighborhoods and one of the most rapidly growing and appreciating areas in the United States.

This area used to be called El Barrio and is now one of Miami’s hippest, still burgeoning areas. What used to be the warehouse and manufacturing district of Greater Miami, developers have rehabilitated neglected warehouses, shuttered factories, and other unused buildings, transforming them into luxury residential and office buildings and art complexes, galleries, and performing art spaces.

Edgewater is a neighborhood in Midtown Miami – roughly bounded by 17th Street to the south, 37th Street to the north and the Florida East Coast Railway & East First Avenue to the west, and the Biscayne Bay area to the east.

Recent construction of high-rise condo buildings and mid-rise residential buildings, have brought rapid urbanization and buyers from around the world to this upcoming area in Miami.

Due to the close location to the famous Miami Design District and the fast growing of the area, the popularity of Edgewater condos has boomed tremendously as the brand new Miami’s trendy district.

Wynwood actually includes the Miami Design District, but has developed an identity of its own thanks to an exploding, albeit still very rough and gritty, arts scene made popular by cheap rents and major exposure during Art Basel Miami Beach.

While there are still only a very small handful of bars and restaurants, Wynwood is an edgy area for creative types with plenty of loft and gallery spaces favored by young hipster types who aren’t averse to living in transitional neighborhoods.

Also within Wynwood is a mall-like town center complex of apartment buildings surrounded by shops.

Wynwood Art District is an environment out of the ordinary that contains more than 70 galleries, museums and art collections. Here it is also a small park called The Wynwood Walls, which in reality is a permanent exhibition of outdoor gear, consisting of works by some of the world’s famous graffiti painters. In addition, there are hundreds of other graffiti painted walls around the neighborhood.

A nice option is Wynwood Kitchen and Bar, where you will have a memorable dining experience in the heart of this emerging arts community in Miami. You can also enjoy the happy hour every Friday, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, with live music.

The Wynwood Artwalk is an event created to showcase the art galleries within the Wynwood Art District. On the second Saturday of each month arts enthusiasts can walk through the galleries along the North Miami Avenue.

Miami Design District

The Miami Design District located in Midtown, within the area bounded by NE Second Avenue, NE Fifth Avenue East and West, and NW 36th Street to the south, has emerged as the “new South Beach” of Miami with a New York SoHo touch, built -and literally created- from an area people were afraid to walk through after 6:00 pm some years ago.

The area was made up mostly of low-rise old warehouses that have been converted into commercial spaces, art galleries, restaurants and cafes, but now includes a lot of new construction, especially for the designer retail.

Today the district has become “the place” for trend styles ranging from retro, progressive to indie, and a hipster paradise for furniture-import companies, interior designers and architects which includes a calendar of events, such as the internationally lauded ART BASEL, which attracts the who’s who of the art world.

The district also became a big player in Miami’s nightlife with its bars, lounges, clubs and restaurants.

The Miami Design District is home to more than 130 art galleries, exhibition halls, creative services, architectural offices, shops, antique shops, restaurants and bars.
